Watch the video and learn 5 things to keep in mind when designing CMDB.

#1 - Define items to start with

We recommend starting with the basic entities that most of the people will recognize as crucial for keeping clarity and good order.

 hardware

 servers

 applications

 databases

Check possible data models for inspiration. System layer, hardware layer, application layer and other.

#2 - Automated versus manual data update

You will have to manage some data manually (e.g. catalogue of applications or services). Many other items can be regularly scanned and imported automatically. Check for autodiscover possibilities of your CMDB software or third party solutions. ObjectGears CMDB provides range of IT infrastructure solutions.

 decrease errors

save time spend for manual update

#3 - Baseline and actuals

Define baseline values and let system highlight changes that should be validated. How can this be set up? Check our case study. It demonstrates well flexibility of a Low code development platform used for CMDB solution in meeting various needs you may encounter.

baseline - original / intended / aproved values

 actuals - real current values

 compare and highlight deviations

#4 - Let CMDB feed data into systems

You do not have to just import data to CMDB. You can also set up systems according to values defined in CMDB. Develop a process where you define configuration in your CMDB, apply approval process if needed and then propagate the data into target servers, applications or other systems. ObjectGears CMDB allows you to execute your custom Powershell scripts to which you can pass parameters from ObjectGears CMDB.

#5 - Visualize the data

Bring clarity to dependencies, redundancy or issues. A picture is worth a thousands words. Define scheme templates that highlight relationships important from particular point of view - high availability, service support, financial perspective, end of life roadmap of used software and hardware components. Check how ObjectGears schemes can be designed.
